DO7 co-owners Slowie & $H The Producer combine to devastating effect on ‘Signs’, the 3rd drop on the fledgling Bristol imprint, perfectly encapsulating the label’s dark but soulful grime MO. ‘Signs’ sees Slowie & featured artist Komposa tell the stories of their growth as men and artists, and stake their claims to a piece of the city’s music pie, warning the industry snakes and clout chasers that they’re “not guaranteed a slice”.

Following the previous DO7 single ‘Warmonger’, Slowie continues his blistering end to 2020 with 2 verses delivered in his signature abrasive Bristol-to-the-core style. On ‘Signs’, the SWAMP81 co-signed artist effortlessly switches between hilariously disrespectful punchlines and a more reflective heartfelt side. However, it’s on the hook where Slowie elevates ‘Signs’ beyond standard grime-fare, expanding his vocal range to showcase a previously unheard ability with harmonies. London-born, Bristol-based Komposa is another MC having a strong finish to the year, his feature here following hot on the heels of his well-received ‘Charging Up’ EP (released on his own NTT Ents label). His slightly smoother, more measured delivery provides a strong counterbalance to Slowie’s more aggressive style.

Underpinning the whole track is a trademark $H The Producer composition, previously showcased on his ‘Silence The Whisperers’ EP, DO7’s initial release. The ‘Signs’ instrumental offers ample space for the MCs to shine, whilst his hauntingly intricate keys ensure the instrumental stands alone in its own right. A strikingly original and soulful take on grime, ‘Signs’ also serves as a primer for Slowie & $H The Producer’s forthcoming album, to be released on DO7 in early 2021.
